Things that go bump in the night

I was startled awake around 2 in the morning last night with a loud bump. The cats jumped up as well so I knew it wasn't just a dream. I was pretty sure no one had gotten into the house as the alarm hadn't been set off, but I looked around a bit and found nothing.

This morning as I was planning my day, I realized that loud bump in the night was the Sunday New York Times landing on my porch. We've had a lot of rain lately, yet it was only single wrapped - so the delivery person (good arm) landed it right on my doorstep (under my bedroom).

I thought perhaps the added noise might be due to the Times' newly found gravitas - having let go of Judith Miller, but I'm not so sure there isn't more ballast there to untie.

So yes, in case you wondered, the news can scare you awake these days.
