Analysis of Comedy Central Content on YouTube

Update: NewsCloud Releases Reporting Engine for YouTube's Comedy Central Takedowns. Now you can do live keyword searches for which videos are available or broken.

While Viacom has released public statements saying that they were targeting YouTube with requests to take down whole episodes, I found the takedowns to be fairly indiscriminate. For example, 63% of Daily Show clips (and 58% of all shows) taken down were less than 5 minutes in length. ... We also wanted to get a sense of the number of page views just our subset of video clips had generated for YouTube over time - this also represents potential lost revenue for Viacom. Just the subset of broken clips with view count information left in the Google cache represents 14,867,004 viewings. While the live videos at YouTube represent 23,322,598 viewings. Or, 38,189,602 combined.

Update: There was another purge last night: Of 897 Daily Show videos on YouTube sampled, 699 were missing or broken. That's nearly 78% of Daily Show videos now taken down for alleged copyright infringement without any regard for fair use from what I can tell.

Original post: I'll be posting more about this soon on NewsCloud. This is not a fully scientific analysis and it's not completely free of duplicate or incorrect entries (though I tried), but it is a reasonably good approximation of working and broken YouTube links to Comedy Central content which I found via the Google Search API (ironic, huh?). I used google queries daily+show, colbert+report and south+park. Unless YouTube wants to provide a better report from their database, this may be the best we can estimate how many clips they've taken down, which ones and why.

Clip duration and views were only available to me for videos that are still working at YouTube. Missing videos (those taken down) don't provide this information. I'll let others crunch the metadata below to try to draw broader conclusions.

I also apologize in advance to fans if Viacom sees this list of remaining working videos and issues another DMCA takedown notice to YouTube. They could easily get this information for themselves on YouTube.

The Bart Ehrman shows may have been removed specifically because Ehrman wants to avoid being caught lying about the historical evidence re: the New Testament.

He has already been caught lying on the radio about the NT.

It looks like most of those "working links" aren't working any more either. I wouldn't mind watching the videos on the comedy central site but they make it hard to search for specific clips and they take them off quickly. In my ENG 201 class we use daily show and other clips for some papers and its really irritating when i can't find them online anywhere.
