Search for 60 Senate Seats: Georgia Senate Race May Go Democratic
While it's still unclear that the Democrats will capture Senate seats in Alaska and Minnesota, it appears that they may get at least a runoff in Georgia.
Apparently, Georgia's Secretary of State's preliminary tallies don't include as many as 600,000 urban voters who voted early - in areas dominated by Democratic-leaning African Americans.
Georgia state law also has a mandatory runoff if the winning candidate doesn't get at least 50% of the vote.
So, currently, incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss has only 50.4% percent of the vote... and when these urban votes are counted, he may actually fall behind Democrat Jim Martin currently at 46.2%.
The runoff would occur December 2nd if it's needed.
So, if Democrats pull off a win in Alaska against convicted felon incumbent Ted Stevens and Al Franken maintains his incredibly slim lead in Minnesota (2,517 votes with 98% reporting), then they may be able to focus resources on turning out folks to vote for Dem. Jim Martin in December.
If the Democrats only reach 59 Senate seats, then Joe Lieberman may be one of the most powerful men in Washington for the next four years.
